Chief Operator – Wastewater Systems
Full Time (40 hour work week)
Salary: $61,106 – $81,474 (2018)
Plus a comprehensive benefit package and OMERS pension plan
Applications are invited from qualified and interested candidates for the above-noted non-union position at the Wastewater Treatment Plant and Collection System in the Environmental Services Department.
Reporting to the Supervisor - Wastewater Systems, the Chief Operator is responsible for planning/scheduling/assigning/supervising the day-to-day work for the treatment plant and collection system staff in the operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant, Collection System and Pumping Stations in accordance with the applicable Environmental Compliance Approvals, Regulations and Legislation. Must have a good working knowledge of treatment processes, equipment and computer software applications that are utilized to operate, maintain and report. The incumbent will have a team leadership role, develop work duties for employees and assume the duties of the Supervisor in his absence. This position is the Overall Responsible Operator (ORO) and must be available for after-hours calls.
Essential (Minimum) Qualifications:
  • Two (2) year post-secondary diploma in Mechanical/Chemical/Civil Engineering, Environmental Services field or related field of study. Equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
  • Valid Ontario Class IV Wastewater Treatment and Class III Wastewater Collections licenses are preferred.
  • Candidates with a valid Class III Wastewater Treatment License with the ability to obtain a Class IV Wastewater Treatment license within twelve (12) months of hire will be considered.
  • Candidates with a valid Ontario P.Eng license in Mechanical, Chemical or Civil Engineering with the ability to obtain a Class IV Wastewater Treatment license within twelve (12) months of hire will be considered.
  • Five (5) years’ applicable experience in Wastewater Treatment Plant processes, operations and Collections, including three (3) years of supervisory or lead hand experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of all of the applicable legislation as it relates to a Class IV Wastewater Treatment and Collections system.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, superior interpersonal skills and the ability to manage and motivate staff using effective team building skills.
  • Strong knowledge of computer and software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Capable of safely lifting 50 pounds.
  • Valid Class G Driver’s License.
